Quotas for everyone

The culture of entitlement marches on

This is an archived blog post from The Acorn.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee’s sixth Report on Empowerment of Women declared:

It is a matter of great concern that there have been no effort on the part of the government to provide scheduled caste women better opportunities for pursuing higher studies abroad by way of reservation of seats exclusively for them. [Sify]

The Jamiatul-Ulema-e-Hind has joined the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat in the quest for quotas:

A month after Imam Bhukari of Jama Masjid, Delhi, led a delegation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to press for reservation in jobs and educational institutions for the Muslims, Jamiat met him on May 17 to demand a share in the quota pie.

The organisations, however, haven’t made clear the percentage of reservation they want for the Muslims. The consensus seems to be on bargaining for a ‘‘proportionate share of 8.5 per cent’’.[IE]Students from across the Line of Control don’t want to miss out too. At a conference :

We want quotas in the Indian Institute of Management, the Indian Institute of Technology and law colleges of India. India should not ignore us,” said Shafquat Ali Inqlabi, a resident of Gilgit, told rediff.com.

Inqlabi says, Indian maps always show Gilgit and Baltistan as part of India. The Constitution of India mentions that we are part of India. In your eyes, we are Indians and Pakistan has occupied’ Indian territory. Then, why should we not get admissions in the IIMs and the IITs?” he says, adding, I am an engineer, but now, I want to study law in the best of Indian law colleges. Help me get admission.”

One of the demands made in a resolution unanimously passed by the conference — which had the tacit support of Indian government — says, The Government of India should provide openings in higher, professional and technical educational institutions to deserving students from Gilgit-Baltistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, who are denied necessary facilities for such education.’[Rediff]
